Hidden Horsham - Get to Horsham

Now that you have looked at all the sights you have missed it is time to visit Horsham. Use the links below to find out how to get here

You could come by road using streetmap.co.uk and use the AA or RAC to plan your route. The thumbnails below are scanned from the 1950 AA gazeteer and show the Horsham street map and a route planner to get to Littlehampton and Basingstoke

Horsham Council recommends that you park here or use park and ride to save money

You could come by coach using National Express and arrive at the Railway Station car park as if you had come by train using the national rail network. This is about ten minutes walk from the town centre. Taxis from the nearby rank will bring you all the way in if you require

Keen cyclists could arrive via the Downs Link. This path connects Guildford to Shoreham and passes within about two miles from Horsham at Southwater. Marked cycle routes will bring you into Horsham

The images above show how the AA described Horsham in its 1950 Gazeteer. In those days the population was recorded as 16,540, presumably from the 1941 census. The early closing day was Thursday and Market day preceded it on Wednesday. The one-way system shows how traffic was still allowed up West Street, long before the town was bypassed by the A24 or even the ring road. St Mary's Church, the Causeway and Denne House are recorded as places of interest

One of the routes detailed is to Littlehampton. It shows Southwater station as being on the A24. The A24 now bypasses Southwater and the station is undergoing redevelopment. The Downs Link normally goes through the station but has a detour up until 2007
