Horsham Football Club

Horsham Football Club was set up in 1871 although it was not until 1881 that the club was firmly established and played its first game against local side Dorking. Its history is well documented on their website, see external links below. The club is now known as the Horsham Hornets

The club has elevated its presence by getting into the 'Second Round Proper' by beating Maidenhead United 4-1 then going on to draw 1-1 against the leaders of the First Division (League 3). Swansea went ahead after 40 minutes but Horsham were awarded a penalty with just six minutes to go. Lewes Taylor put the ball in the net then the team hung on for the draw. The game had been delayed by 20 minutes to allow the protective tent to be removed from the pitch. The driving wind and rain continued throughout the match laying waste to much of the grass

The match was televised by Sky Television and shown live on Sky Sports. An elevated gantry was erected on the centre line for the camera and another erected on the eastern goal for the commentators including Alan Shearer. Temporary additional floodlighting for the game was provided and powered by a truck mounted generator. BBC Radio 5 Live also provided live commentary from the match with Mark Pougatch

Shops in the town supported the match by updating their windows with banners supplied free by the West Sussex County Times. The WSCT also printed a poster and a page of supporting advertisments in the sports section of the paper on the day of the match

The club currently operates out of the ground in Queen's Street, opposite the Queen's Head public house. Plans are afoot to relocate the club to Holbrook and convert the current ground to housing. The club hosted the Northern Ireland team on the morning of Wednesday 5th September 2007 allowing them to use the ground for practice before flying out from nearby Gatwick Airport
