Hidden Horsham - Aerial Views

The Francis Frith site has a collection of 18 aerial photographs of Horsham. At first they are a little difficult to identify but with the help of some town knowledge and modern satellite photography they can be interpreted. They were taken in 1933, 1959 and 1974 and are good references for the building of the northern ring road that cut across the top of the Carfax. The satellite photos were taken around 2001, evident by the old swimming pool and the missing Pavillions in the Park

Tradition dictates that the top of the picture is in the north but this is not always the case below. In some instances the Local Live images have been rotated but the perspective prohibits a direct copy of the old image. Clicking the colour photo, will open a satellite view with the image in the north / top position. Click on the magnifying glass to enlarge the black and white photo or click on the photo itself to go the Francis Frith site where old photos may be purchased and support the running of this site

1933: This is a view of London Road when the gasometers were still in place. Below and to the right is Brunswick Place with the Methodist Church to the left of that terrace. The photograph was taken before the bypass was built. The Carfax is in the top left corner

1933: This is another view of Brunswick Place, this time before the star shaped building was erected. An empty gasometer can be seen along the top centre of the photo. The trees down the right hand side have been removed in favour of housing

1933: This image is more difficult to place due to the lack of remaining buildings. The gas works have long since moved on but the road still remains. The Carfax multi-storey car park has replaced many of the buildings in the top centre. West Street runs right across the top with the Corn Exchange and Black Horse Inn. These two buildings were demolished in 1964 and Mothercare & Fatface are in new buildings now

1959: This image clearly shows the town before the ring road cut through North Road and St Mark's Church. Also the area where Piries Place is now can be identified by a row of houses emerging from the Frith logo. Compare this to the last image on this page which shows a similar view in 1974

1974: The roadworks are clearly visible in the top left of this image. The white building at the bottom centre is the old Tanbridge School on the site where Sainsburys stands today. The multi-storey car park above it has been replaced by the Forum and shops, built before the satellite imaging. Building works are apparent in the bottom corner of the park, this may be the bowling alley or just parking for the redevelopment

The main body of buildings running diagonally across the image is West Street as it preprares to be attached the the open air early version of Swan Walk
