Hidden Horsham - Archway Cellars

Hidden Horsham Archway cellars

Archway Cellars

Archway Cellars are in Park Terrace West

No 1 Park Terrace West is built on the site of the third, and last, Horsham gaol. It was the first gaol in the world to accommodate prisoners in their own individual cells. The last public execution took place in 1844 and the building was closed and pulled down a year later, much of the material being used for railworks from Three Bridges

Park Square was built on the site but was divided into the East and West terraces when the railway, having arrived in Horsham in 1848, came through to Petworth in 1859. It was at this point that the road was excavated to allow vehicles under the railway and this in turn created the cellars

The iron railway bridge is to the left of the picture. These cellars are now used by a local flower seller, Stone Edge Nurseries. In 1951 they were occupied by Gillings who sold wet fish. The road at the bottom of the picture is Queens Street
