Hidden Horsham - Bank Chambers

Hidden Horsham Engraving

Bank Chambers

This is the engraving above the east doorway in South Street, next to the Black Horse estate agency but actually part of the Horsham branch of Lloyds TSB Bank

It can be seen on the full door frame photo below that the writing does not appear directly above the doorway so this must have changed at some point. At the turn of the 19thC this building was owned and occupied by the Hunt Brothers. It was sold in 1906 to the Capital and Counties Bank who demolished it and rebuilt today's building. This includes the property next door currently shared with Edinburgh Woollen Mill. Photographs show that the new building had been completed by 1912

Until 1805 this had been the site of The Crown public house, rebuilt just a few yards along the road

The whole doorway can be seen by clicking the thumbnail above. Click on the thumbnail for the whole building where the featured doorway is on the extreme left hand side

The image below shows the Causeway c1955 taken from a position very close to the doorway but facing into the Causeway towards St Mary's Church. The colour image shows a similar scene in 2006
