Gantry Crane

This is a chain hoist on a gantry with a platform above Santanders (formerly the Abbey Bank) at No. 1 South Street. Carraiges would be unloaded and stored in the two upper floors of the warehouse prior to being resold in the shop. The fold down platforms are still intact on the two levels

Records show that the shop was originally called H Churchman then later Evershed & Cripps. The Churchman family lived next to the shop in what was Bookends. An advertisment for their store will be revealed by clicking the thumbnail below

The building was grade II listed on May 20th, 1949 and is fully described on English Heritage's Images of England site. Click on the image for the full size photo and on the thumbnail below for the full shop front where the crane is positioned top right
